The Only Thing We Have to Fear is Fear Itself As a child I would hear about Halloween through the radio and television, and would see decorations at big stores during season. I would hear around my town that Halloween was something bad and that we should not practice it. According to my culture, it was perceived as wrong because people thought it would attract witches and the devil. Almost three years ago, since I first came to America, I had the opportunity to experience Halloween myself. Instead of hearing comments about Halloween on the radio or television, I was able to go out and participate in the celebration. I was very surprised with how happy everyone was while preparing for Halloween. The lights, decorations, and the spookiness of all the costumes, fog and all the spiders were overwhelmingly shadowed by the happiness and vibes of everyone. It was that night when I saw how everyone was enjoying and celebrating, instead of making it a scary night people ensured that the children received candies and everyone else had a g ood time. The way I experienced Halloween made me perceive the American culture in a different way where optimism is a core value. Beyond giving a different meaning to a Holiday, optimism allows for anyone to have endless opportunities. This is what makes the American culture so unique. Shortly after my family moved here I found that Americans make me feel confident and included in their culture and I further became optimistic about my future. The Reality Of Huckleberry Finn Essay Huckleberry Finn is a book that contains elements of romantic and realistic fiction; even though it contains both these elements, it is a book on realistic fiction, and that is how it was written to be. Mark Twain used historical facts and data to make this story realistic, it used situations that would normally happen in the time the novel takes place in. Huckleberry Finns father is a vagrant and a despicable person; his actions are written to how a man of that characteristic would act. Two more characters in this novel also act accordingly; the Duke and the Dauphin. A couple of crooks and frauds who are ill at heart and produce no good at all. A kind man Jim, a black slave at the beginning of this novel, goes through much and many people go through much for him. Of these characters I have just mentioned, Jim is the only considerate one, and the Duke and the Dauphin and Huckleberry Finns father are evil. Huckleberry Finn has no strong feelings for his father except that of resentment. His father abandoned him when he was a child and come backs to town once in a while. His father would beat Huck many times usually because he was drunk. This is not unusual for someone drunk to do if that person is a beater. I used to be scared of him all the time, he tanned me so much. (Twain, p. 25) Besides him beating Huck, his father has put fear into Huck, which is sad, but is realistic. Besides beating Huck, he also scolded him for trying to get an education; he though Huck was trying to become smarter than his father, and he wouldnt have that. Youre educated, too, they say can read and write. You think youre bettern your father, now, dont you, because he cant? Ill take it out of you. (Twain, pg. 26) Not only is Hucks father mean and petty, he is also greedy. Ive been in town two days, and I haint heard nothing but about you bein rich. I heard about it away down the river, too. (Twain, pg. 27)But Hucks father isnt the only greedy character in this play, there are two men that pose as the Duke and the Dauphin (who are obviously not really who they claim to be). This simple equation, that can actually be rather complex at times, is the basis for what is known as the double-entry accounting system (Investopedia, 2015). The double-entry accounting system is also used to create and maintain an organizations balance sheet. According to Investopedia (2015), The balance sheet is a complex display of this equation, showing that the total assets of a company are equal to the total of liabilities and shareholder equity (Accounting Equation). With this paper, I will examine the components of the accounting equation and balance sheet, and provide examples of this equation. As previously stated the accounting equations is comprised of assets, liabilities, and stockholders equity. Assets are resources that have a value to an organization such as; cash, accounts receivable, inventory, equipment, etc. (Accounting Coach, 2015, What are Assets). Liabilities are financial responsibilities of an organization such as; accounts payable, wages, interest, taxes, etc. (Accounting Coach, 2015, Balance Sheet). However, there existed no law to protect the Blacks, which made Massachusetts to take advantage and pass a statutory that declared all Blacks as slaves and forbid intermarriage with the Americans. This brought inequality in education among other aspects that the Blacks fight for to date. The big question one would ask is, if there are any changes that have occurred in the education for the blacks since 1963 after passing of the civil rights. Civil Rights After Abraham Lincoln took over the presidency, he abolished slavery but this did not mean that Blacks had equal rights with the Whites. It was until the year 1963 during the biggest ever demonstration in the history of America with about 250,000 people that segregation ceased a bit. It resulted in major gains for the blacks in education, social life, politically, legally and economically (â€Å"FAQs† web). In the year 1964, an act was passed that outlawed discrimination in public facilities. In addition, an anti- poverty law that ensured equal employment rights to all Americans and voting rights act were passed (â€Å"FAQs† web). Before this, there were diverse schools for the blacks and others for the whites and no white would join a Black school or vice versa. With the passing of these laws, racial segregation of public schools was unconstitutional and any black or White child had a right to join a school of their choice. Besides the fight yielding equal educational opportunities for the blacks, it attained curriculum provisions. For the first time in history, curriculum included courses that taught the history of Black Americans as well as their contribution to the Americans history, the fruits. However, this did not last long because the Whites sent their children to private schools, reducing the prestige of public schools. The quest of inadequate education is not yet over since most Blacks cannot take their children to private schools. Does Racism affect Education Today? Black segregation remains, which has affected the education systems to date. Although decent housing is a basic right in America, many black Americans have to put up with poor housing because of unfair treatment. Some of the Black Americans can afford better housing but racism and bending of the law blocks them out. Therefore, they have to join their poor counterparts and rent houses in the ghettos with poor neighbourhoods. Apparently, housing is a major cause of educational differences between the poor and the rich. It is clear that the Blacks and the whites live in distinct neighbourhoods and thus attend nearby public or private schools. This has fostered differential treatment between the black schools and the Whites schools, reducing young Blacks’ chances to quality education and good jobs. For instance, a visit to a well-off public or private schools will lead to spotting up-to-date textbooks, comput ers, VCRs, and numerous curriculum activities to round out their education. On the other hand, public schools in the inner or poor estates use old textbooks, old equipment, and no special programmes. In the places where the whites and the Blacks attend the same schools, either race hangs around with those of their own (Wilmore web).
